«New Realities - Diverse Futures» is the theme of the current edition of the interdisciplinary lecture series «Kein Kino». The lecture takes place event-related physically in the Toni Kino or virtually and addresses an interdisciplinary audience. The series' focus is the discussion of projects at the intersection of design – arts – technology. The guests share their design processes and theoretical foundation on a project-by-project basis and invite to an open discussion. The lecture series deals with pressing topics from game design, video art, social media, immersive arts, dance, theatre and composition for film and new media. The goal is to examine trends critically and identify productive collaborations between disciplines. The series is intended as an invitation to exchange knowledge and to provide impulses for cross-disciplinary projects.

Artists talk
Margaret & Christine Wertheim
Language: English
Zoom

«The cnidarians are dying. Corals everywhere are being killed by global warming. Refusing to capitulate in the face of loss, Australian-born, California-based sister-artists Margaret and Christine Wertheim have fabulated a response using traditional handicraft techniques: their crochet reefs shimmer and swell in colors and shapes inspired by the Great Barrier Reef. Like the living reefs they emulate, the sisters have created a collaborative installation to which over 20,000 people in 50 cities and countries have contributed. Art, science, mathematics and community practice are synthesized in work that reflects the possibilities of stitchery and the hidden history of using craft techniques for scientific representation.» [Source: eflux announcements_Museum Frieda Burda]

Artists talk
Maria Guta & Lauren Huret
Language: English
Location: Kino Toni (3.G02)

Maria Guta (*1983, Bucharest) is a Romanian artist based in Switzerland. Her work mainly looks into mechanisms of production and promotion of the self and persona construction as a strategic form of public identity. Making use of video, performance, immersive and social media, she reenacts these mechanisms by placing herself both behind and in front of the camera. In the general context of Digital Transformation, she is intrigued by concepts as beauty standardisation, eternal youth and immortality. She is also a passionate researcher on celebrity and the new forms of influence created with social media and each new technology.

Lauren Huret (*1984, Paris) has lived in Switzerland since pursuing a master's degree at Geneva School of Art and Design (HEAD). Her work, mainly composed of videos, installations, performances and collages, is based on an on-going examination of the influence of belief systems and mystical ideas on media and tech culture. Her various research projects have taken her to Silicon Valley to examine A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) and to the Philippines to investigate content moderation and the new status of the image in the age of mass-sharing. Lauren collaborates regularly with the artist Maria Guta and together they are developing pieces that reflect a common fascination with the icon and hyper-mediatization of the human figure.

Artist talk: «Culture Vulture or nah, a case for culture to be within Visual Communication Design»
Cherry Ann Davis (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin, Departement Design)
Language: English
Location: Kino Toni (3.G02)

Like many designer in the global majority my design education was very Eurocentric because design ‘began there’, but if we look wider and deeper we can see ourselves reflected. Visual communication design as taught from a Eurocentric center tends to be racist, exclusionary and discriminatory. Can we deal with design’s violent history? What could a decolonial, anti-racist and intersectional feminist design practice look like? Cherry-Ann Davis is a Trinbagonian professional macco and bacchanalist i.e. an independent researcher and storytelling creator from Trinidad and Tobago. Navigating the decolonial pluriverse and pluriversal decoloniality, through pan-Africanism and hybrid ethnographic approaches. Cherry also hates big words.
