Highlights from the ZHdK 2023 Research Report
In 2023, numerous new projects were supported through the Digitalization Initiative of the Canton of Zurich (DIZH), placing a spotlight on the theme of digital transformation in Design Research. In this context, the Digital Health Design Living Lab (DHD Living Lab) hosted the inaugural Digital Health Design Challenge, aiming to foster innovative ideas from interdisciplinary teams for healthcare decision-making.
The SNF-funded project "Interfacing the Ocean: Towards a Sea Change in Design" was approved in spring and launched in autumn. Moved by urgent warnings from environmental sciences about the ocean facing critical ecological tipping points, this research project aims to redefine design perspectives in and with the ocean. Partners include the Jordan Lab, Behavioural Evolution Research Group (Max Planck Institute), BLUE: More-than-Human Ethnographies of Oceans in Crisis (Aarhus University), and the research stations STARESO in Corsica and CPA Pula in Croatia.
Another significant development was seen in fostering young researchers, with an increase in the number of doctoral candidates in design or participating in the Transdisciplinary Artistic Program supported by swissuniversities. This rising interest in research is crucial for shaping the future of teaching and research at the Department of Design.
